Issey Miyake, the avant-garde Japanese designer, had been under contract to cosmetics company Shiseido for some time to produce a fragrance, when Frenchwoman Chantal Roos was called in to head up their new fragrance division, Beaute Prestige Internationale. 'He wasn't keen,' she recalls. 'He said he hated every smell except water. For him, fragrance was a vulgar, Western thing.' He was not likely to be a fan of Roos, the woman who helped launch the strongly scented Opium for Yves Saint Laurent.
For a while, says Roos, 'we were at it cats and dogs'. But Miyake was lucky. Roos' genius lies in understanding how to distil the essence of a designer's style into fragrance, bottle, name and marketing strategy so it appears like a genuine extension of his fashion philosophy. Miyake started to communicate with her, sending her books, taking her to museums. But when she sent samples, he would still tell her: 'I don't like it. I only like water. Eventually Roos joked, 'OK, let's call it I'Eau d'lssey [Issey's water] then'. The name stuck. Roos put together a presentation on the water theme, and Miyake became interested.
The perfume went on to become a modern classic and the key influence on the nineties trend for light, aqueous florals. Roos has now been poached back to Yves Saint Laurent.
